Video tools

Extract audio from video

Convert MP4 files

MP4 is the world's most compatible video format. It usually holds H.264 video with AAC audio and plays on virtually every phone, browser, TV and editing app.

Convert MOV files

MOV is Apple's QuickTime format, used by iPhones and Mac editing apps. It often contains the same H.264 or HEVC video as MP4, but many Windows and Android apps handle it poorly.

Convert AVI files

AVI is Microsoft's 1992 video container. It's still used by older DVD players, TVs and Windows software, but it's large, can't stream on the web and lacks modern features.

Convert MKV files

MKV (Matroska) is an open, flexible container that can hold almost any codec plus unlimited audio and subtitle tracks. It's popular for movies and archives, but many phones and editors can't open it.

Convert WebM files

WebM is Google's royalty-free web video format, based on Matroska with VP8, VP9 or AV1 video and Opus or Vorbis audio. Browsers play it natively, but many editors and phones prefer MP4.

Convert FLV files

FLV is the Flash Video format that powered early YouTube. Since Adobe ended Flash Player in December 2020, browsers can't play FLV — convert old FLV files to MP4.

Convert WMV files

WMV is Microsoft's Windows Media Video format from 1999, stored in the ASF container. It plays well on Windows but poorly on Macs, phones and browsers.

Convert 3GP files

3GP is a lightweight MP4-style format designed for 3G mobile phones and MMS messages. Files are small but low-resolution; modern phones prefer MP4.

How does in-browser video conversion work?

Fylo uses ffmpeg, the open-source engine behind most professional video software, compiled to WebAssembly. The engine (about 31 MB) downloads once the first time you convert and is cached afterwards. When the codecs inside your file already fit the target format — for example an iPhone MOV to MP4 or an OBS MKV to MP4 — Fylo repackages the video in seconds without re-encoding, so there's no quality loss. Other conversions re-encode on your device, which takes longer for long or high-resolution videos.

Which video format should I use?

Choose MP4 for sharing, uploading and playing on any device. Keep MOV for Apple editing, MKV for archives with several audio or subtitle tracks, and WebM for royalty-free web video. AVI, WMV, FLV and 3GP are legacy formats best converted to MP4.
