Why convert JPG to PNG?
PNG is the better choice when you need to edit an image repeatedly or add transparency later. Every time a JPG is re-saved it loses a little more detail; a PNG copy stops that generational loss, so designers often convert a JPG to PNG before cropping, annotating or layering it in Figma, Canva or Photoshop. Some upload forms, sticker apps and print-on-demand sites also insist on PNG.
Does converting JPG to PNG affect quality or size?
Converting doesn't restore detail the JPG already threw away — compression blocks and colour banding stay exactly as they are; they just stop getting worse. Because PNG is lossless, file size jumps: a 2 MB phone photo commonly becomes 5–8 MB. The background stays solid. PNG supports transparency, but removing a background is a separate step.
What's the difference between JPG and PNG?
JPG is the world's most common photo format. It uses lossy compression to keep photos small, but it has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it's re-saved.
PNG is a lossless format with full transparency. It keeps every pixel exact, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics — but photos saved as PNG are large.

Frequently asked questions
Does converting JPG to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG preserves the JPG exactly as it is, including any compression artefacts. What you gain is that further edits and re-saves no longer lose quality.
Why is my PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
JPG discards fine detail to stay small; PNG keeps every pixel. Photos contain lots of random detail that lossless compression can't shrink, so 3–6× larger files are normal. For a smaller modern file, try JPG to WebP instead.
Are my JPG files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts JPG to PNG entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
