Why convert JPG to AVIF?

AVIF is the most efficient image format browsers support today. Built on the AV1 video codec, it keeps smooth gradients and skies free of the blocky artefacts JPG shows at small sizes, which makes it ideal for hero images, product galleries and photo-heavy pages where every kilobyte counts.

Does converting JPG to AVIF affect quality or size?

AVIF encoding is far more demanding than JPG, so expect a few seconds per photo — the work runs in a background thread so the page stays responsive. Quality 60 is a good default and typically gives files 40–60% smaller than the JPG. Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 16+ display AVIF, but some older apps and Windows viewers can't open it yet.

What's the difference between JPG and AVIF?

JPG is the world's most common photo format. It uses lossy compression to keep photos small, but it has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it's re-saved.

AVIF is a modern format based on the AV1 video codec. It often produces files about half the size of JPG with fewer artefacts, and supports transparency and HDR.

Why does AVIF conversion take longer than other formats?

The AV1 encoder tries many more ways of compressing each block of pixels to find the smallest result. That search costs time when saving, but nothing when viewing.

Should I use AVIF or WebP on my website?

AVIF is usually smaller; WebP encodes faster and is supported by more older tools. Many sites serve AVIF first with a WebP or JPG fallback using the HTML <picture> element.

Are my JPG files uploaded to a server?

No. Fylo converts JPG to AVIF entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
