Why convert PNG to AVIF?
Large transparent PNGs — product shots on cut-out backgrounds, illustrations, hero graphics — are some of the heaviest assets on a web page. AVIF stores the same alpha channel at a fraction of the size, which helps image-heavy sites pass Core Web Vitals.
Does converting PNG to AVIF affect quality or size?
AVIF is lossy by default, so tiny details may soften at low quality; the default of 60 is a good balance. Encoding is slower than PNG and can take several seconds for large images. Keep the original PNG as your master file — AVIF is a delivery format, not an editing format.
What's the difference between PNG and AVIF?
PNG is a lossless format with full transparency. It keeps every pixel exact, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics — but photos saved as PNG are large.
AVIF is a modern format based on the AV1 video codec. It often produces files about half the size of JPG with fewer artefacts, and supports transparency and HDR.

Frequently asked questions
Does AVIF support transparent backgrounds?
Yes. AVIF stores a separate alpha plane, so cut-outs and soft shadows from your PNG are preserved.
Can I open AVIF files on Windows?
Windows 11 and recent Windows 10 builds show AVIF once the free AV1 Video Extension from the Microsoft Store is installed. All modern browsers open AVIF without extra software.
Are my PNG files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts PNG to AVIF entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
