Why convert WebP to AVIF?
If your site already serves WebP, AVIF is the next step for squeezing more out of image-heavy pages. It handles gradients, skies and dark scenes better than WebP's older VP8-based compression, reducing banding at small file sizes.
Does converting WebP to AVIF affect quality or size?
Converting between two lossy formats re-compresses the image, so start from the highest-quality WebP you have. AVIF encoding is slower than WebP — a few seconds per large image on a typical laptop. Transparency is preserved; animated WebPs convert from the first frame only.
What's the difference between WebP and AVIF?
WebP is Google's web image format. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality.
AVIF is a modern format based on the AV1 video codec. It often produces files about half the size of JPG with fewer artefacts, and supports transparency and HDR.

Frequently asked questions
Is AVIF always smaller than WebP?
Not always, but usually. On photos AVIF tends to be 20–30% smaller at similar quality; on tiny images or simple graphics the difference can be small.
Do all browsers support AVIF?
Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Opera and Safari 16+ do. Very old browsers and some email clients don't, so keep a fallback where it matters.
Are my WebP files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts WebP to AVIF entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
