Why convert ICO to AVIF?

If you're building a modern site and want icon images as small as possible, AVIF is the most efficient option current browsers support.

Does converting ICO to AVIF affect quality or size?

The largest image in the ICO is encoded as AVIF with transparency. For crisp edges on small icons, use quality 80 or higher; lossy AVIF compression can soften 1-pixel details.

What's the difference between ICO and AVIF?

ICO is the Windows icon format and the classic favicon.ico. One ICO file holds several square images (16 to 256 px) so each screen can use the sharpest size.

AVIF is a modern format based on the AV1 video codec. It often produces files about half the size of JPG with fewer artefacts, and supports transparency and HDR.

Is AVIF good for tiny icons?

For icons under 64 × 64 pixels the savings are small and lossy artefacts are more noticeable. PNG or lossless WebP is often the better choice there.

Does the AVIF keep transparency?

Yes, the icon's alpha channel is preserved.

Are my ICO files uploaded to a server?

No. Fylo converts ICO to AVIF entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
