Why convert AVIF to ICO?

Brand assets exported for the web are increasingly AVIF. Converting to ICO lets you reuse them as a favicon.ico or desktop icon without opening an editor.

Does converting AVIF to ICO affect quality or size?

Fylo decodes the AVIF, keeps its transparency, and renders each icon size from the full-resolution source for the sharpest result. Images that aren't square are centred on a transparent square.

What's the difference between AVIF and ICO?

AVIF is a modern format based on the AV1 video codec. It often produces files about half the size of JPG with fewer artefacts, and supports transparency and HDR.

ICO is the Windows icon format and the classic favicon.ico. One ICO file holds several square images (16 to 256 px) so each screen can use the sharpest size.

What resolution should my AVIF source be?

At least 256 × 256 pixels and square. Smaller sources are upscaled for the 256 size and will look soft.

Does the ICO keep transparency?

Yes. Each size is stored as a PNG inside the ICO, preserving the full alpha channel.

Are my AVIF files uploaded to a server?

No. Fylo converts AVIF to ICO entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
