Why convert GIF to ICO?
Classic web graphics and pixel-art sprites are often GIFs, and they translate naturally into icons. Convert one into a favicon.ico or Windows icon in a few seconds.
Does converting GIF to ICO affect quality or size?
GIF transparency carries into every icon size. Fylo scales the first frame to each selected size; start from a source at least as large as the biggest size you select, because upscaling small sprites softens their edges.
What's the difference between GIF and ICO?
GIF is a 1987 format limited to 256 colours per frame with on/off transparency. It's still everywhere thanks to simple animation support, but it's inefficient for photos.
ICO is the Windows icon format and the classic favicon.ico. One ICO file holds several square images (16 to 256 px) so each screen can use the sharpest size.

Frequently asked questions
Can an ICO be animated?
No. ICO files are static; animated cursors use the separate ANI format. Fylo uses the GIF's first frame.
Which icon sizes should I pick for pixel art?
Sizes equal to or smaller than your sprite. A 32 × 32 sprite looks best as 16 and 32-pixel icons; larger sizes will be smoothed.
Are my GIF files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts GIF to ICO entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
