Why convert JPG to ICO?
ICO is the format Windows uses for program and folder icons, and the classic favicon.ico that browsers request from the root of every website. Turning a logo JPG into an ICO lets you set a custom desktop shortcut icon or give your site a favicon that works even in old browsers.
Does converting JPG to ICO affect quality or size?
ICO images must be square and at most 256 × 256 pixels, so Fylo centres your image on a square canvas and scales it into each size you choose. Small sizes like 16 × 16 lose detail, so bold, simple logos work best. JPG has no transparency, so the icon keeps the JPG's background — start from a PNG if you need transparent corners.
What's the difference between JPG and ICO?
JPG is the world's most common photo format. It uses lossy compression to keep photos small, but it has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it's re-saved.
ICO is the Windows icon format and the classic favicon.ico. One ICO file holds several square images (16 to 256 px) so each screen can use the sharpest size.

Frequently asked questions
What sizes should a favicon.ico contain?
16 × 16 and 32 × 32 cover browser tabs and bookmarks; 48 × 48 is used by Windows. Fylo includes 16, 32, 48 and 256 by default.
Is a 256 × 256 ICO too big for a favicon?
Browsers only use the size they need, but the file itself grows. For a lean favicon.ico, select only 16, 32 and 48 in Advanced.
Are my JPG files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts JPG to ICO entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
