Why convert AVIF to JPG?
AVIF is still unsupported in many desktop editors, office apps, print services, older phones and upload forms. Converting to JPG makes images saved from modern websites usable everywhere.
Does converting AVIF to JPG affect quality or size?
The AVIF is decoded and re-encoded as JPG at quality 90. Expect the JPG to be noticeably larger — often around twice the AVIF's size — because JPG is less efficient. HDR and 10-bit AVIFs are mapped to standard 8-bit colour, and transparency becomes white.
What's the difference between AVIF and JPG?
AVIF is a modern format based on the AV1 video codec. It often produces files about half the size of JPG with fewer artefacts, and supports transparency and HDR.
JPG is the world's most common photo format. It uses lossy compression to keep photos small, but it has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it's re-saved.

Frequently asked questions
Why won't my AVIF file open?
Many apps and older operating systems lack an AV1 image decoder. Windows needs the AV1 Video Extension, and older Photoshop versions need a plugin. JPG avoids the problem entirely.
Does Fylo keep HDR from AVIF images?
No. JPG is 8-bit standard dynamic range, so HDR highlights are tone-mapped to normal range when your browser decodes the image.
Are my AVIF files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts AVIF to JPG entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
