Why convert BMP to JPG?

BMP files from scanners, older cameras, legacy Windows screenshots and industrial software are enormous. JPG cuts them to a fraction of the size so you can email, upload or store them easily.

Does converting BMP to JPG affect quality or size?

A 24-bit BMP of 1920 × 1080 is about 6.2 MB; as a quality-90 JPG it's usually a few hundred kilobytes. JPG is lossy, so for screenshots of text consider PNG instead — it's lossless and still much smaller than BMP.

What's the difference between BMP and JPG?

BMP is Microsoft's uncompressed bitmap format. It's simple and lossless but huge: every pixel is stored raw, so a 12-megapixel photo takes about 36 MB.

JPG is the world's most common photo format. It uses lossy compression to keep photos small, but it has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it's re-saved.

Why are BMP files so big?

BMP stores every pixel uncompressed: three bytes per pixel for 24-bit colour. JPG and PNG compress that data.

Should I convert BMP to JPG or PNG?

JPG for photos and scans where the smallest size matters; PNG for screenshots, diagrams and anything with text, where you want zero quality loss.

Are my BMP files uploaded to a server?

No. Fylo converts BMP to JPG entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
