Why convert JPG to BMP?
BMP is the native bitmap format of Windows. Some legacy programs, embedded displays, label printers, machine-vision tools and older games only read uncompressed bitmaps, and programmers often want BMP because it's trivial to parse pixel by pixel.
Does converting JPG to BMP affect quality or size?
The bitmap is pixel-exact to the decoded JPG, but the file balloons because BMP stores raw 24-bit colour: width × height × 3 bytes, plus a little row padding. A 4000 × 3000 photo is roughly 36 MB. There's no quality gain — just a format your target software can read.
What's the difference between JPG and BMP?
JPG is the world's most common photo format. It uses lossy compression to keep photos small, but it has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it's re-saved.
BMP is Microsoft's uncompressed bitmap format. It's simple and lossless but huge: every pixel is stored raw, so a 12-megapixel photo takes about 36 MB.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the BMP file so large?
BMP normally has no compression. Each pixel takes 3 bytes, so file size is simply width × height × 3. That's why BMP is rarely used for sharing.
Which type of BMP does Fylo create?
A standard 24-bit Windows bitmap with a BITMAPINFOHEADER, which every version of Windows, Paint and virtually every image library can open.
Are my JPG files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts JPG to BMP entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
