Why convert GIF to BMP?
Retro game modding, embedded LCD projects and some Windows utilities expect BMP. Converting GIF sprites and graphics to BMP gives you a simple, uncompressed file those tools can read.
Does converting GIF to BMP affect quality or size?
The first frame is expanded from GIF's palette to 24-bit colour, and transparent pixels are filled with white or a colour you choose. The BMP will be much larger because it isn't compressed.
What's the difference between GIF and BMP?
GIF is a 1987 format limited to 256 colours per frame with on/off transparency. It's still everywhere thanks to simple animation support, but it's inefficient for photos.
BMP is Microsoft's uncompressed bitmap format. It's simple and lossless but huge: every pixel is stored raw, so a 12-megapixel photo takes about 36 MB.

Frequently asked questions
Which frame of an animated GIF is used?
The first frame. Animated GIFs are flattened to that single frame, because BMP can only hold one image.
Can I keep the GIF's palette in the BMP?
Fylo writes 24-bit BMP for compatibility. The colours are identical; they're just stored per pixel instead of in a palette.
Is transparency kept?
No — 24-bit BMP has no alpha. Pick a background colour that matches where the image will be used.
Are my GIF files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts GIF to BMP entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
