Why convert AVIF to BMP?
Scientific, industrial and legacy Windows software often needs raw bitmaps. Converting AVIF straight to BMP removes the need for an AV1 decoder on the target machine.
Does converting AVIF to BMP affect quality or size?
The BMP holds the decoded pixels without compression, so a small AVIF can become a file dozens of times larger. HDR images are reduced to 8-bit colour and transparency is flattened onto a solid background.
What's the difference between AVIF and BMP?
AVIF is a modern format based on the AV1 video codec. It often produces files about half the size of JPG with fewer artefacts, and supports transparency and HDR.
BMP is Microsoft's uncompressed bitmap format. It's simple and lossless but huge: every pixel is stored raw, so a 12-megapixel photo takes about 36 MB.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my BMP 30 times larger than the AVIF?
AVIF is one of the most efficient compressed formats; BMP isn't compressed at all. A 1920 × 1080 image is about 6.2 MB as BMP regardless of content.
Does BMP support HDR?
No. Standard BMP stores 8 bits per colour channel, so HDR detail is mapped to normal range.
Are my AVIF files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts AVIF to BMP entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
