Why convert ICO to BMP?
Classic Windows resource editors and some older programming tools work with BMP rather than ICO. This extracts the icon artwork in that simple format.
Does converting ICO to BMP affect quality or size?
The largest icon is decoded and written as a 24-bit BMP; transparent areas get a solid background colour you can choose under Advanced.
What's the difference between ICO and BMP?
ICO is the Windows icon format and the classic favicon.ico. One ICO file holds several square images (16 to 256 px) so each screen can use the sharpest size.
BMP is Microsoft's uncompressed bitmap format. It's simple and lossless but huge: every pixel is stored raw, so a 12-megapixel photo takes about 36 MB.

Frequently asked questions
Which size from the ICO is used?
The largest image the ICO contains — typically 256 × 256 or 48 × 48 pixels — so the bitmap is as detailed as possible.
Isn't an ICO already a BMP?
Older ICO files store bitmap data inside, but without the BMP file header and with a separate transparency mask. Fylo turns it into a standalone .bmp any program can open.
Can I choose the background colour?
Yes. Open Advanced and pick any colour; white is the default.
Are my ICO files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts ICO to BMP entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
