Why convert JPG to WebP?
WebP is the format Google recommends for faster websites. Swapping JPG photos for WebP cuts page weight, which improves Largest Contentful Paint and Core Web Vitals — useful for blogs, Shopify and WooCommerce stores, and portfolios. All modern browsers, including Safari since version 14, display WebP.
Does converting JPG to WebP affect quality or size?
Both formats are lossy, so the conversion re-encodes the image. At Fylo's default quality of 80 most photos look identical to the source while shrinking by a quarter to a third. Pushing quality to 100 can make the WebP larger than the JPG without adding any detail, so stay between 75 and 85 for web use.
What's the difference between JPG and WebP?
JPG is the world's most common photo format. It uses lossy compression to keep photos small, but it has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it's re-saved.
WebP is Google's web image format. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality.

Frequently asked questions
Is WebP better than JPG?
For websites, usually yes: WebP gives similar quality at a smaller size and also supports transparency and animation. JPG is still more compatible with old software, printers and some email clients.
Will WordPress accept WebP files?
Yes. WordPress has supported WebP uploads since version 5.8 (2021), and themes display them like any other image.
Are my JPG files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts JPG to WebP entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
