Why convert AVIF to WebP?

Some CMS platforms, image tools and older Safari versions handle WebP but not AVIF. Converting gives you a widely supported modern format while keeping files far smaller than JPG or PNG.

Does converting AVIF to WebP affect quality or size?

Expect the WebP to be somewhat larger than the AVIF — typically 20–40% — at similar visual quality. Transparency carries over. Both formats are lossy, so keep quality at 80 or above to avoid compounding artefacts.

What's the difference between AVIF and WebP?

AVIF is a modern format based on the AV1 video codec. It often produces files about half the size of JPG with fewer artefacts, and supports transparency and HDR.

WebP is Google's web image format. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality.

Which is more widely supported, WebP or AVIF?

WebP. It has worked in every major browser since Safari 14 in 2020, and many more desktop apps read it than AVIF.

Can I convert many AVIF files to WebP at once?

Yes. Drop as many files as you like; Fylo converts them in a background thread and lets you download them all as one ZIP.

Are my AVIF files uploaded to a server?

No. Fylo converts AVIF to WebP entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
