Why convert PNG to WebP?
WebP is the modern replacement for PNG on the web: it supports full alpha transparency like PNG but compresses far better. Converting logos, product cut-outs, UI graphics and screenshots to WebP speeds up pages without losing their transparent backgrounds.
Does converting PNG to WebP affect quality or size?
Fylo encodes lossy WebP at quality 80 by default, which keeps transparency and makes photographic PNGs dramatically smaller. For pixel-perfect graphics, switch on Lossless in Advanced — Google measured lossless WebP files about 26% smaller than PNG on average.
What's the difference between PNG and WebP?
PNG is a lossless format with full transparency. It keeps every pixel exact, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics — but photos saved as PNG are large.
WebP is Google's web image format. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality.

Frequently asked questions
Does WebP support transparency like PNG?
Yes. WebP has a full 8-bit alpha channel in both lossy and lossless modes, so soft shadows and anti-aliased edges are preserved.
Should I use lossy or lossless WebP for PNG images?
Use lossy (the default) for photos and complex artwork. Use lossless for icons, screenshots with text and pixel art where every pixel must stay exact.
Are my PNG files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts PNG to WebP entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
