Why convert GIF to WebP?

GIF is one of the least efficient formats on the web. Converting still GIFs to WebP reduces page weight while keeping transparency, and WebP isn't limited to 256 colours if you edit the image later.

Does converting GIF to WebP affect quality or size?

Fylo converts the first frame to a still WebP. For flat graphics, enable Lossless in Advanced for pixel-exact output; for photographic GIFs the default lossy setting gives the smallest file. Animated GIF to animated WebP isn't supported yet.

What's the difference between GIF and WebP?

GIF is a 1987 format limited to 256 colours per frame with on/off transparency. It's still everywhere thanks to simple animation support, but it's inefficient for photos.

WebP is Google's web image format. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality.

How much smaller is WebP than GIF?

For animations, Google measured lossy WebP files 64% smaller and lossless WebP 19% smaller than the equivalent GIFs. Still images see similar or bigger gains.

Can I convert an animated GIF to animated WebP?

Not yet — Fylo converts the first frame today. Animation support is planned.

Are my GIF files uploaded to a server?

No. Fylo converts GIF to WebP entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
