Why convert WebP to GIF?

Some messaging apps, email clients and older forums still accept GIF but reject WebP. Converting a WebP sticker or graphic to GIF makes it postable almost anywhere.

Does converting WebP to GIF affect quality or size?

Fylo converts the first frame of the WebP into a still GIF. Colours are reduced to a 256-colour palette with optional dithering, and WebP's smooth alpha becomes GIF's on/off transparency. Animated WebP to animated GIF isn't supported yet — it needs frame-by-frame decoding we plan to add.

What's the difference between WebP and GIF?

WebP is Google's web image format. It supports lossy and lossless compression, transparency and animation, and is typically 25–35% smaller than JPG at similar quality.

GIF is a 1987 format limited to 256 colours per frame with on/off transparency. It's still everywhere thanks to simple animation support, but it's inefficient for photos.

Does Fylo convert animated WebP to animated GIF?

Not yet. Today Fylo converts the first frame to a still GIF. Full animation support is on our roadmap.

Why does my GIF look different from the WebP?

GIF can only show 256 colours per frame and has no partial transparency, so gradients may band and soft edges may become jagged.

Are my WebP files uploaded to a server?

No. Fylo converts WebP to GIF entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
