Why convert PNG to GIF?

GIF is still universally accepted for simple graphics in email newsletters, old CMS platforms, forum avatars and messaging apps. Flat-colour logos, icons and diagrams with few colours convert to GIF with little or no visible change.

Does converting PNG to GIF affect quality or size?

GIF transparency is all-or-nothing: each pixel is fully visible or fully transparent. Semi-transparent edges from your PNG — soft shadows, anti-aliasing — become either solid or invisible, which can leave jagged edges on dark backgrounds. Images with more than 256 colours are reduced to a palette, with optional dithering.

What's the difference between PNG and GIF?

PNG is a lossless format with full transparency. It keeps every pixel exact, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics — but photos saved as PNG are large.

GIF is a 1987 format limited to 256 colours per frame with on/off transparency. It's still everywhere thanks to simple animation support, but it's inefficient for photos.

Why does my transparent PNG have rough edges as a GIF?

GIF supports only on/off transparency. Pixels that were partly transparent in the PNG must become fully opaque or fully clear, which removes smooth anti-aliasing.

Is GIF smaller than PNG?

For tiny graphics with few colours, sometimes. For photos and gradients, PNG or WebP are almost always smaller and better looking.

Are my PNG files uploaded to a server?

No. Fylo converts PNG to GIF entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
