Why convert JPG to GIF?
Converting a JPG to GIF makes sense for very old software, forum signatures, email templates, or platforms that only accept GIF uploads. A still GIF is also a starting point if you plan to assemble an animation from several images in another tool.
Does converting JPG to GIF affect quality or size?
A JPG can contain millions of colours, but a GIF frame holds only 256. Fylo builds an optimised palette for each image and applies dithering to hide banding, but smooth skin tones and gradients can look grainy. For photos the GIF is often larger than the JPG, too — use PNG or WebP if you don't specifically need GIF.
What's the difference between JPG and GIF?
JPG is the world's most common photo format. It uses lossy compression to keep photos small, but it has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it's re-saved.
GIF is a 1987 format limited to 256 colours per frame with on/off transparency. It's still everywhere thanks to simple animation support, but it's inefficient for photos.

Frequently asked questions
Will the JPG be animated after converting to GIF?
No. A single JPG becomes a single-frame GIF. Animation needs several frames, which is a different tool.
Why do my colours look grainy in the GIF?
That's dithering — tiny dots of palette colours mixed to imitate shades the 256-colour palette lacks. Switch dithering off in Advanced to get flat colour bands instead.
Are my JPG files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts JPG to GIF entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
