Why convert GIF to JPG?

Turn a GIF into a JPG when you need a still preview, a thumbnail for an article, or a format accepted by photo printing services and forms that reject GIF.

Does converting GIF to JPG affect quality or size?

GIFs use at most 256 colours, so the JPG won't gain colour depth, but it's often smaller for photographic GIFs. Transparent pixels become white. Only the first frame of an animation is saved.

What's the difference between GIF and JPG?

GIF is a 1987 format limited to 256 colours per frame with on/off transparency. It's still everywhere thanks to simple animation support, but it's inefficient for photos.

JPG is the world's most common photo format. It uses lossy compression to keep photos small, but it has no transparency and loses a little detail every time it's re-saved.

How do I save a specific frame of an animated GIF?

Fylo currently exports the first frame. To pick another frame, use a frame-by-frame editor; frame selection is on our roadmap.

Will the JPG look better than the GIF?

It will look the same, minus any transparency. Converting can't add colours that the GIF palette never had.

Are my GIF files uploaded to a server?

No. Fylo converts GIF to JPG entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
