Why convert GIF to PNG?
PNG was designed to replace GIF: it's lossless, supports full alpha transparency and has no 256-colour limit. Converting GIF graphics to PNG makes them easier to edit and recolour — and often smaller, too.
Does converting GIF to PNG affect quality or size?
Fylo saves the first frame of the GIF as a lossless PNG, with GIF transparency preserved exactly. Simple graphics usually come out a little smaller as PNG, because PNG's filtering plus DEFLATE compresses better than GIF's LZW.
What's the difference between GIF and PNG?
GIF is a 1987 format limited to 256 colours per frame with on/off transparency. It's still everywhere thanks to simple animation support, but it's inefficient for photos.
PNG is a lossless format with full transparency. It keeps every pixel exact, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics — but photos saved as PNG are large.

Frequently asked questions
Is PNG better than GIF?
For still images, yes: lossless, usually smaller, more colours and smooth transparency. GIF's remaining advantage is simple, universally supported animation.
Why was PNG created?
In the 1990s GIF's LZW compression was covered by a Unisys patent. PNG was designed in 1995–96 as a free and technically better replacement.
Are my GIF files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts GIF to PNG entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
