Why convert BMP to PNG?

PNG is the natural upgrade for BMP: both are lossless, but PNG compresses, supports transparency and works in every browser and web form. It's the right choice for archiving screenshots, diagrams and scanned line art.

Does converting BMP to PNG affect quality or size?

Every pixel is preserved exactly. Typical BMP screenshots shrink by 80–95% as PNG because flat areas compress extremely well; noisy photos shrink less, often to around half.

What's the difference between BMP and PNG?

BMP is Microsoft's uncompressed bitmap format. It's simple and lossless but huge: every pixel is stored raw, so a 12-megapixel photo takes about 36 MB.

PNG is a lossless format with full transparency. It keeps every pixel exact, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics — but photos saved as PNG are large.

Is BMP to PNG lossless?

Yes. Both formats are lossless, so the image is identical — only the file size changes.

Which BMP types can Fylo read?

The common 1, 4, 8, 24 and 32-bit Windows bitmaps. If a 32-bit BMP stores real alpha values, the PNG keeps them.

Are my BMP files uploaded to a server?

No. Fylo converts BMP to PNG entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
