Why convert AVIF to PNG?

When you need to edit an AVIF image — adding text, cropping, retouching — PNG is the safest working format. It's lossless, so you avoid stacking more compression on top of AVIF's, and every editor can open it.

Does converting AVIF to PNG affect quality or size?

The PNG stores exactly what the AVIF decodes to, with transparency intact. File size grows considerably — often 5–10× for photos — because AVIF is one of the most efficient formats while PNG prioritises exactness.

What's the difference between AVIF and PNG?

AVIF is a modern format based on the AV1 video codec. It often produces files about half the size of JPG with fewer artefacts, and supports transparency and HDR.

PNG is a lossless format with full transparency. It keeps every pixel exact, which makes it ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics — but photos saved as PNG are large.

Is AVIF to PNG lossless?

The conversion adds no further loss — PNG records the decoded AVIF exactly. Detail that AVIF compression already removed can't come back.

Why is the PNG so much larger?

AVIF uses advanced lossy compression from the AV1 video codec, while PNG's lossless compression can't discard detail, so photographic images take far more space.

Are my AVIF files uploaded to a server?

No. Fylo converts AVIF to PNG entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
