Why convert AVIF to GIF?
If a forum, email builder or old CMS only takes GIF, this turns modern AVIF images into something it accepts.
Does converting AVIF to GIF affect quality or size?
AVIF images can carry over a billion colours with 10-bit HDR; a GIF frame holds 256. Fylo picks the best 256 colours for your image and dithers to smooth gradients, but expect visible grain on photos. Animated AVIF files are converted from the first frame.
What's the difference between AVIF and GIF?
AVIF is a modern format based on the AV1 video codec. It often produces files about half the size of JPG with fewer artefacts, and supports transparency and HDR.
GIF is a 1987 format limited to 256 colours per frame with on/off transparency. It's still everywhere thanks to simple animation support, but it's inefficient for photos.

Frequently asked questions
Will an animated AVIF become an animated GIF?
Not yet — Fylo converts the first frame. Animated conversion is planned.
Is GIF a good format for photos?
No. GIF's 256-colour limit makes photos grainy or banded. Use JPG or WebP for photos and keep GIF for simple graphics.
Are my AVIF files uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo converts AVIF to GIF entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
