Why convert GIF to AVIF?

If you have old GIF images on a website, AVIF is the most bandwidth-efficient replacement. It supports transparency and wide colour, so the image can be improved and edited later.

Does converting GIF to AVIF affect quality or size?

The first frame is encoded as AVIF. GIF art often has hard edges and flat colour, so use quality 70 or higher to avoid soft edges. AVIF encoding takes a moment longer than other formats.

What's the difference between GIF and AVIF?

GIF is a 1987 format limited to 256 colours per frame with on/off transparency. It's still everywhere thanks to simple animation support, but it's inefficient for photos.

AVIF is a modern format based on the AV1 video codec. It often produces files about half the size of JPG with fewer artefacts, and supports transparency and HDR.

Does AVIF support animation like GIF?

Yes, AVIF supports image sequences, but Fylo currently converts the first frame only.

Is AVIF good for graphics with text?

At higher quality settings, yes. At low quality, fine text and sharp lines can blur — lossless WebP or PNG may suit pure text graphics better.

Are my GIF files uploaded to a server?

No. Fylo converts GIF to AVIF entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
