Why convert BMP to AVIF?

If you're archiving or publishing large numbers of BMP photos and storage or bandwidth is the concern, AVIF produces the smallest files of any widely supported format.

Does converting BMP to AVIF affect quality or size?

AVIF can shrink a BMP photo by 95% or more at quality 60 with little visible change. Because it's lossy, keep the original BMP or a PNG copy if you may need pixel-exact data later.

What's the difference between BMP and AVIF?

BMP is Microsoft's uncompressed bitmap format. It's simple and lossless but huge: every pixel is stored raw, so a 12-megapixel photo takes about 36 MB.

AVIF is a modern format based on the AV1 video codec. It often produces files about half the size of JPG with fewer artefacts, and supports transparency and HDR.

How long does BMP to AVIF take?

Usually 1–5 seconds per image on a modern laptop, longer for very large images or older phones. Everything runs locally, so your device's speed sets the pace.

Is AVIF suitable for archiving?

It's great for space-efficient copies, but for archival masters a lossless format like PNG (or the original BMP) is safer.

Are my BMP files uploaded to a server?

No. Fylo converts BMP to AVIF entirely inside your browser using a background Web Worker, so your files never leave your device. That's also why it's fast — there's no upload or download wait.
