Why convert MOV to MP4?
iPhone videos and Mac screen recordings are MOV files, which some Windows apps, Android phones, websites and upload forms reject. MP4 plays everywhere.
What happens when you convert MOV to MP4?
iPhone MOVs contain H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio — codecs MP4 supports — so Fylo copies the streams into an MP4 container instead of re-encoding. Quality and size don't change. HEVC videos stay HEVC, so very old Windows PCs may still need the HEVC extension; ProRes and other codecs are re-encoded to H.264.
How does Fylo convert MOV to MP4?
Fylo reads the MOV with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and writes H.264 (x264, constant quality CRF 23) with AAC audio, plus the faststart flag for instant web playback. Most MOV files already contain H.264 video, so Fylo usually copies the video without re-encoding (and converts only the audio if needed), which is fast and lossless. Only the first video and audio track are kept, and the original resolution is preserved unless you pick 1080p, 720p or 480p under Advanced.
What's the difference between MOV and MP4?
MOV is the QuickTime File Format that Apple introduced in 1991. MP4 was later standardised on the same structure, so the two are close relatives. iPhones record MOV files (usually H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio), and professional cameras and editors use MOV for high-quality ProRes footage.
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a container format standardised in 2001 and based on Apple's QuickTime file structure. A container holds separately compressed video and audio streams plus metadata such as subtitles, chapters and cover art. Most MP4s use H.264 video and AAC audio; newer files may use H.265 (HEVC) or AV1.

Frequently asked questions
Does converting MOV to MP4 lose quality?
Not when the video is repackaged, which is the case for nearly all iPhone and Mac recordings.
Why is my iPhone MP4 still HEVC?
Fylo keeps the original stream to avoid quality loss. If a device can't play HEVC, use Compress Video, which re-encodes to H.264.
Is my MOV file uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo runs ffmpeg, the same engine used by professional video tools, compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser. Your MOV file is read directly from your device and never sent anywhere.
