Why convert MOV to WebM?
Web designers often need screen recordings or product clips recorded on a Mac as WebM for HTML5 video backgrounds and web apps.
What happens when you convert MOV to WebM?
MOV codecs aren't allowed in WebM, so Fylo re-encodes video to VP8 with a fast real-time preset and audio to Vorbis. Transparency in ProRes 4444 files isn't preserved. Long or 4K clips take a while; scale them to 1080p or 720p under Advanced for faster results.
How does Fylo convert MOV to WebM?
Fylo reads the MOV with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and writes VP8 with Vorbis audio, using libvpx's real-time preset so encoding stays practical in a browser. MOV's usual codecs (H.264, HEVC, ProRes) can't go into WebM as-is, so the video is re-encoded. Speed depends on your device: short phone clips take seconds, while on our slow test PC a 2-minute 1080p video took about 10 minutes. Only the first video and audio track are kept, and the original resolution is preserved unless you pick 1080p, 720p or 480p under Advanced.
What's the difference between MOV and WebM?
MOV is the QuickTime File Format that Apple introduced in 1991. MP4 was later standardised on the same structure, so the two are close relatives. iPhones record MOV files (usually H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio), and professional cameras and editors use MOV for high-quality ProRes footage.
WebM was announced by Google in 2010 as an open, royalty-free alternative to H.264 for HTML5 video. It's a subset of Matroska restricted to VP8, VP9 or AV1 video and Vorbis or Opus audio. Browser screen recorders and many web tools save WebM by default.

Frequently asked questions
Can WebM keep my MOV's transparent background?
Not with this converter — VP8 output is opaque. Alpha WebM requires VP9 encoding, which isn't supported yet.
Will WebM play on iPhones?
Safari supports WebM from iOS 15, but many iPhone apps don't. Use MP4 for broad compatibility.
Is my MOV file uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo runs ffmpeg, the same engine used by professional video tools, compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser. Your MOV file is read directly from your device and never sent anywhere.
