Compress Video Online
Make videos smaller — choose quality and resolution
To compress a video, drop it above, choose Light, Balanced or Strong compression and, if you like, a smaller resolution, then click Compress. Fylo re-encodes it to efficient H.264 MP4 in your browser — no upload of private videos. If the result isn't smaller, you keep your original file.

How video compression works
Fylo encodes with x264 in constant-quality (CRF) mode: instead of a fixed bitrate, it spends bits where the picture needs them. Light (CRF 24) is close to visually lossless, Balanced (CRF 28) suits sharing and Strong (CRF 32) prioritises size. Lowering resolution has the biggest effect — 1080p has 2.25× the pixels of 720p, so phone videos often shrink by 60–80% at 720p with little visible difference on small screens.
What to expect
Because encoding runs on your own device, speed depends on your computer: short phone clips take seconds, while long 1080p or 4K videos can take several minutes on a laptop. Audio is converted to 96 kbps AAC. Videos already compressed efficiently — such as HEVC iPhone clips — may not shrink much; in that case Fylo keeps your original rather than giving you a bigger file.
| Setting | x264 CRF | Typical saving* | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | 24 | 20–50% | Keeping quality high |
| Balanced | 28 | 50–75% | Sharing, email, social |
| Strong | 32 | 70–90% | Tight size limits |
Frequently asked questions
Does compressing a video reduce quality?
Yes, slightly — that's how the size comes down. Light compression is very hard to tell apart from the original.
How do I get a video under a specific size?
Use Compress Video for WhatsApp, which targets an exact file size in MB.
Why is compression slow?
Video encoding is heavy work and runs on your device for privacy. Lowering the resolution speeds it up.
Can I compress 4K videos?
Yes, though it takes a while in the browser. Choose 1080p or 720p for faster, smaller results.
Can I compress several videos at once?
Yes, they're processed one after another; download them individually or as a ZIP.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Compress Video runs entirely in your browser — your files are processed on your own device and never sent anywhere. Once the page has loaded, it even keeps working if your connection drops.
