Why GIFs need a custom palette
A GIF frame can only show 256 colours. Simple converters use a generic palette, which makes skin tones blotchy and gradients banded. Fylo runs ffmpeg's two-pass palette method: it first analyses your clip to choose the 256 colours that matter most, then maps every frame to that palette with ordered dithering. The result is noticeably cleaner, especially for screen recordings and faces.
Keep GIFs small
GIF is an old, inefficient format, so size grows quickly with width, length and frame rate. A 5-second, 480-pixel-wide clip at 12 fps is usually 1–4 MB; doubling the width roughly quadruples the size. For chat apps, keep GIFs under about 6 seconds and 480 px wide. Where the platform allows video, an MP4 is often 5–10× smaller than the same GIF.

Frequently asked questions
How long can the GIF be?
Up to 30 seconds. Shorter GIFs (under 10 seconds) load faster and are accepted by more platforms.
Can I add text or captions?
Not in this tool yet — the video editor coming soon will support text.
Why is my GIF bigger than the video?
GIF compression is far less efficient than modern video codecs. Reduce width, length or frame rate to shrink it.
Does the GIF loop?
Yes, it loops forever by default.
Can I make a GIF from part of a long video?
Yes — set the start time and length; only that section is converted.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Video to GIF runs entirely in your browser — your files are processed on your own device and never sent anywhere. Once the page has loaded, it even keeps working if your connection drops.
