Why convert 3GP to WebM?
Browsers don't play 3GP reliably. WebM works with HTML5 video.
What happens when you convert 3GP to WebM?
Video is re-encoded to VP8 and audio to Vorbis.
How does Fylo convert 3GP to WebM?
Fylo reads the 3GP with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and writes VP8 with Vorbis audio, using libvpx's real-time preset so encoding stays practical in a browser. 3GP's usual codecs (H.263, H.264 (Baseline)) can't go into WebM as-is, so the video is re-encoded. Speed depends on your device: short phone clips take seconds, while on our slow test PC a 2-minute 1080p video took about 10 minutes. Only the first video and audio track are kept, and the original resolution is preserved unless you pick 1080p, 720p or 480p under Advanced.
What's the difference between 3GP and WebM?
3GP was defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project for 3G mobile phones and MMS messaging. It's based on the same ISO media structure as MP4 but restricted to phone-friendly codecs such as H.263 or H.264 Baseline video and AMR or AAC audio.
WebM was announced by Google in 2010 as an open, royalty-free alternative to H.264 for HTML5 video. It's a subset of Matroska restricted to VP8, VP9 or AV1 video and Vorbis or Opus audio. Browser screen recorders and many web tools save WebM by default.
