Why convert 3GP to MP4?
Videos recorded on older phones are 3GP files that many computers, editors and websites don't recognise. MP4 is the modern standard.
What happens when you convert 3GP to MP4?
If the 3GP contains H.264 and AAC, Fylo copies the streams into MP4 with no quality loss. H.263 video or AMR audio from very old phones is re-encoded to H.264 and AAC. The resolution stays the same — converting can't add detail to low-resolution phone clips.
How does Fylo convert 3GP to MP4?
Fylo reads the 3GP with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and writes H.264 (x264, constant quality CRF 23) with AAC audio, plus the faststart flag for instant web playback. Most 3GP files already contain H.264 video, so Fylo usually copies the video without re-encoding (and converts only the audio if needed), which is fast and lossless. Only the first video and audio track are kept, and the original resolution is preserved unless you pick 1080p, 720p or 480p under Advanced.
What's the difference between 3GP and MP4?
3GP was defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project for 3G mobile phones and MMS messaging. It's based on the same ISO media structure as MP4 but restricted to phone-friendly codecs such as H.263 or H.264 Baseline video and AMR or AAC audio.
MP4 (MPEG-4 Part 14) is a container format standardised in 2001 and based on Apple's QuickTime file structure. A container holds separately compressed video and audio streams plus metadata such as subtitles, chapters and cover art. Most MP4s use H.264 video and AAC audio; newer files may use H.265 (HEVC) or AV1.

Frequently asked questions
Will converting improve the quality of old phone videos?
No. The MP4 matches the original resolution and detail; it just plays everywhere.
Why is there no sound?
Some very old 3GP files use AMR audio variants that browsers can't decode. If sound is missing, the original codec isn't supported.
Is my 3GP file uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo runs ffmpeg, the same engine used by professional video tools, compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser. Your 3GP file is read directly from your device and never sent anywhere.
