Why convert 3GP to MOV?
iMovie and Photos handle MOV and MP4 more reliably than 3GP.
What happens when you convert 3GP to MOV?
H.264 3GP files are repackaged; older codecs are re-encoded to H.264 and AAC.
How does Fylo convert 3GP to MOV?
Fylo reads the 3GP with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and writes H.264 (x264, CRF 23) with AAC audio in a QuickTime container. Most 3GP files already contain H.264 video, so Fylo usually copies the video without re-encoding (and converts only the audio if needed), which is fast and lossless. Only the first video and audio track are kept, and the original resolution is preserved unless you pick 1080p, 720p or 480p under Advanced.
What's the difference between 3GP and MOV?
3GP was defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project for 3G mobile phones and MMS messaging. It's based on the same ISO media structure as MP4 but restricted to phone-friendly codecs such as H.263 or H.264 Baseline video and AMR or AAC audio.
MOV is the QuickTime File Format that Apple introduced in 1991. MP4 was later standardised on the same structure, so the two are close relatives. iPhones record MOV files (usually H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio), and professional cameras and editors use MOV for high-quality ProRes footage.
