How to convert MOV to WMV

  1. Add your MOV videos

Drag and drop MOV files into the box or tap to choose them. The converter engine (about 31 MB) downloads once, the first time you convert.

  2. Choose quality (optional)

Balanced quality suits most videos. If the codecs already fit WMV, Fylo repackages the file instead of re-encoding it, with no quality loss.

  3. Convert and download

Click Convert, then download each WMV file or all of them as one ZIP.

Why convert MOV to WMV?

If a Windows-only system, kiosk or old PowerPoint deck can't handle QuickTime files, converting Mac footage to WMV avoids missing-codec errors.

What happens when you convert MOV to WMV?

Fylo re-encodes video to WMV2 and audio to WMA2. Expect a larger file than the MOV, especially from HEVC iPhone footage, because the WMV codecs are much older.

How does Fylo convert MOV to WMV?

Fylo reads the MOV with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and writes Windows Media Video 8 (WMV2) with WMA2 audio in an ASF container. MOV's usual codecs (H.264, HEVC, ProRes) can't go into WMV as-is, so the video is re-encoded. Speed depends on your device: short phone clips take seconds, while on our slow test PC a 2-minute 1080p video took about 10 minutes. Only the first video and audio track are kept, and the original resolution is preserved unless you pick 1080p, 720p or 480p under Advanced.

What's the difference between MOV and WMV?

MOV is the QuickTime File Format that Apple introduced in 1991. MP4 was later standardised on the same structure, so the two are close relatives. iPhones record MOV files (usually H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio), and professional cameras and editors use MOV for high-quality ProRes footage.

WMV (Windows Media Video) is a family of Microsoft video codecs introduced in 1999, stored in the Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container together with WMA audio. WMV 9 was standardised as VC-1 and used on HD DVD and early Blu-ray discs.
