Why convert 3GP to WMV?
Older Windows setups may not open 3GP without extra codecs.
What happens when you convert 3GP to WMV?
Fylo re-encodes to WMV2 video with WMA audio.
How does Fylo convert 3GP to WMV?
Fylo reads the 3GP with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and writes Windows Media Video 8 (WMV2) with WMA2 audio in an ASF container. 3GP's usual codecs (H.263, H.264 (Baseline)) can't go into WMV as-is, so the video is re-encoded. Speed depends on your device: short phone clips take seconds, while on our slow test PC a 2-minute 1080p video took about 10 minutes. Only the first video and audio track are kept, and the original resolution is preserved unless you pick 1080p, 720p or 480p under Advanced.
What's the difference between 3GP and WMV?
3GP was defined by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project for 3G mobile phones and MMS messaging. It's based on the same ISO media structure as MP4 but restricted to phone-friendly codecs such as H.263 or H.264 Baseline video and AMR or AAC audio.
WMV (Windows Media Video) is a family of Microsoft video codecs introduced in 1999, stored in the Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container together with WMA audio. WMV 9 was standardised as VC-1 and used on HD DVD and early Blu-ray discs.

Frequently asked questions
Why not MP4?
MP4 also plays on Windows 10/11. Use WMV only for older software.
Is it larger?
Usually yes, compared with the tiny 3GP.
Is my 3GP file uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo runs ffmpeg, the same engine used by professional video tools, compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser. Your 3GP file is read directly from your device and never sent anywhere.
