Why convert MOV to AVI?
If you want to play iPhone or camera footage on an older DVD player, car screen or TV that only reads AVI, this conversion makes it compatible.
What happens when you convert MOV to AVI?
MOV's H.264 or HEVC video is re-encoded to MPEG-4 Part 2 (tagged Xvid) with MP3 audio. HEVC iPhone videos in particular become much larger, because HEVC is about twice as efficient as Xvid. 4K footage takes a long time in the browser; consider reducing the resolution under Advanced.
How does Fylo convert MOV to AVI?
Fylo reads the MOV with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and writes MPEG-4 Part 2 tagged as Xvid with MP3 audio — the combination old DVD players and TVs understand. MOV's usual codecs (H.264, HEVC, ProRes) can't go into AVI as-is, so the video is re-encoded. Speed depends on your device: short phone clips take seconds, while on our slow test PC a 2-minute 1080p video took about 10 minutes. Only the first video and audio track are kept, and the original resolution is preserved unless you pick 1080p, 720p or 480p under Advanced.
What's the difference between MOV and AVI?
MOV is the QuickTime File Format that Apple introduced in 1991. MP4 was later standardised on the same structure, so the two are close relatives. iPhones record MOV files (usually H.264 or HEVC video with AAC audio), and professional cameras and editors use MOV for high-quality ProRes footage.
AVI (Audio Video Interleave) was introduced by Microsoft with Video for Windows in 1992. It's based on the RIFF container used by WAV and stores interleaved chunks of audio and video. In the 2000s, AVI files with DivX or Xvid (MPEG-4 Part 2) video and MP3 audio were the standard for downloaded movies.

Frequently asked questions
Can old DVD players read 4K AVI?
Usually not. Choose 720p or 480p under Advanced for older hardware.
Is the audio kept?
Yes, converted to MP3, which AVI players support universally.
Is my MOV file uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo runs ffmpeg, the same engine used by professional video tools, compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser. Your MOV file is read directly from your device and never sent anywhere.
