Why convert FLAC to AIFF?

Logic Pro and GarageBand prefer AIFF for editing.

What happens when you convert FLAC to AIFF?

Decoded samples are written as 16-bit PCM AIFF — identical audio, about twice the size.

How does Fylo convert FLAC to AIFF?

Fylo decodes the FLAC audio in the FLAC with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and encodes it with 16-bit big-endian PCM with no compression. Both formats are lossless, so the decoded samples are identical; only the container and file size change (a 3-minute song is ≈ 18–24 MB as FLAC and ≈ 32 MB as AIFF). The original sample rate and channel layout are kept unless you change them under Advanced.

What's the difference between FLAC and AIFF?

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) was released in 2001 and later maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation. It compresses PCM audio like a ZIP file compresses data: nothing is thrown away, so a FLAC decodes to exactly the same samples as the source WAV, typically at 50–70% of the size.

AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) was created by Apple in 1988, based on Electronic Arts' IFF format. Like WAV it stores uncompressed PCM audio — just with big-endian byte order — so the two contain identical sound data at the same settings.
