Why convert AIFF to FLAC?
FLAC is the efficient way to archive uncompressed audio, and it's widely supported.
What happens when you convert AIFF to FLAC?
AIFF is losslessly compressed into FLAC, typically 50–70% of the original size.
How does Fylo convert AIFF to FLAC?
Fylo decodes the PCM audio in the AIFF with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and encodes it with FLAC lossless compression. Both formats are lossless, so the decoded samples are identical; only the container and file size change (a 3-minute song is ≈ 32 MB as AIFF and ≈ 18–24 MB as FLAC). The original sample rate and channel layout are kept unless you change them under Advanced.
What's the difference between AIFF and FLAC?
AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) was created by Apple in 1988, based on Electronic Arts' IFF format. Like WAV it stores uncompressed PCM audio — just with big-endian byte order — so the two contain identical sound data at the same settings.
FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) was released in 2001 and later maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation. It compresses PCM audio like a ZIP file compresses data: nothing is thrown away, so a FLAC decodes to exactly the same samples as the source WAV, typically at 50–70% of the size.
