Why convert FLAC to MP3?
FLAC is perfect for archives but large and unsupported by many car stereos, older iPhones and some apps. MP3 copies are small and play everywhere.
What happens when you convert FLAC to MP3?
Fylo encodes MP3 at 192 kbps by default (320 kbps for audiophiles), shrinking files by around 75–80%. Hi-res FLACs are converted to standard 16-bit before encoding.
How does Fylo convert FLAC to MP3?
Fylo decodes the FLAC audio in the FLAC with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and encodes it with the LAME MP3 encoder at 192 kbps (adjustable from 96 to 320 kbps). Going from lossless to lossy is where the big saving happens: a 3-minute song is ≈ 18–24 MB as FLAC but ≈ 4.3 MB at 192 kbps as MP3. The original sample rate and channel layout are kept unless you change them under Advanced.
What's the difference between FLAC and MP3?
FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) was released in 2001 and later maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation. It compresses PCM audio like a ZIP file compresses data: nothing is thrown away, so a FLAC decodes to exactly the same samples as the source WAV, typically at 50–70% of the size.
MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) was developed largely at Germany's Fraunhofer Institute and standardised in 1993. It removes sounds the ear is unlikely to notice — a technique called perceptual coding — so a 3-minute song takes about 4 MB at 192 kbps instead of about 32 MB as WAV. The last MP3 patents expired in 2017, so it's now free to use.

Frequently asked questions
What bitrate keeps FLAC quality?
320 kbps MP3 is indistinguishable from FLAC for most listeners; 192 kbps is a good balance.
Can I convert a whole album?
Yes — drop all the tracks at once and download them as a ZIP.
Is my FLAC file uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo runs ffmpeg, the same engine used by professional video tools, compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser. Your FLAC file is read directly from your device and never sent anywhere.
