Why convert Opus to MP3?
WhatsApp voice messages and many voice-chat recordings are Opus files that won't play in some car stereos, Windows Media Player or older iPhones. MP3 plays everywhere.
What happens when you convert Opus to MP3?
Fylo decodes the Opus audio and encodes MP3 at 192 kbps by default; 128 kbps is plenty for voice notes.
How does Fylo convert Opus to MP3?
Fylo decodes the Opus audio in the Opus with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and encodes it with the LAME MP3 encoder at 192 kbps (adjustable from 96 to 320 kbps). Both formats are lossy, so each conversion discards a little detail — start from the highest-bitrate Opus you have. A 3-minute song is ≈ 2.9 MB at 128 kbps as Opus and ≈ 4.3 MB at 192 kbps as MP3. The original sample rate and channel layout are kept unless you change them under Advanced.
What's the difference between Opus and MP3?
Opus is an open, royalty-free codec standardised by the IETF as RFC 6716 in 2012. It blends speech technology from Skype's SILK with music coding from Xiph's CELT, so it handles both voice and music well. Files are usually stored in the Ogg container with the .opus extension.
MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III) was developed largely at Germany's Fraunhofer Institute and standardised in 1993. It removes sounds the ear is unlikely to notice — a technique called perceptual coding — so a 3-minute song takes about 4 MB at 192 kbps instead of about 32 MB as WAV. The last MP3 patents expired in 2017, so it's now free to use.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a WhatsApp voice note?
Export the chat or share the voice note to Files, then drop the .opus file here.
Why is the MP3 bigger?
Opus is more efficient than MP3, so matching quality takes more bytes.
Is my Opus file uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo runs ffmpeg, the same engine used by professional video tools, compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser. Your Opus file is read directly from your device and never sent anywhere.
