Whiteout PDF — Cover and Replace Text

Hide text or images and type new content on top

To white out part of a PDF, open it above — a white box is placed on the first page. Drag and resize it over the text or image you want to hide, then use Text to type a replacement on top. Add as many boxes as you need and click Save PDF. Your document stays on your device.

How to make a whiteout pdf

  1. Open the PDF

    Choose the document.

  2. Cover and retype

Resize the white box over the old content, then add new text on top.

  3. Save PDF

    Download the corrected PDF.

Whiteout is cover-up, not redaction

A white box hides content visually, but the original text may still exist underneath in the PDF's content and can sometimes be copied or extracted. That's fine for correcting a typo or updating a date. For sensitive information that must be removed completely, print to PDF afterwards or use dedicated redaction software that deletes the underlying text.

Matching the page

On white paper, whiteout is invisible. On coloured or scanned backgrounds, select the box and change its colour to match. Then add replacement text in Helvetica, Times or Courier at a similar size to the surrounding words.

Common whiteout fixes

Typical uses include correcting a misspelt name, changing a date or amount on a document you created, removing an old address from a letterhead, hiding a page number before merging, or clearing a filled-in field on a scanned form so you can fill it again. For each fix, place the white box, then add text on top in a similar font and size, and zoom in to check the edges are fully covered.

Keep the original file in case you need to go back — the editor always saves a new copy.

Can I change the box colour?

Yes, in the Selected panel.

Does whiteout permanently delete the text underneath?

No — it covers it. Use proper redaction for confidential data.

Can I white out an image?

Yes, cover any area of the page.

Is there a limit on boxes?

No.

Will whiteout show when printed?

On white paper the box is invisible when printed; on coloured paper, match the box colour first.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Whiteout PDF runs entirely in your browser — your files are processed on your own device and never sent anywhere. Once the page has loaded, it even keeps working if your connection drops.
