Free Online Document Editor

Write and edit Word, text and Markdown files privately

To edit a document online, open a Word (.docx), text, Markdown or HTML file above — or start blank. Format with headings, bold, colours, lists, tables, links and images, use find and replace, and save as DOCX, PDF, TXT, Markdown or HTML. It autosaves on your device and never uploads.

How to make a document editor

  1. Open or start blank

Choose a .docx, .txt, .md or .html file, or start a blank document.

  2. Write and format

Use the toolbar for styles, fonts, colours, alignment, lists, tables, links and images.

  3. Save

Pick DOCX, PDF, TXT, Markdown or HTML and click Save.

A word processor in your browser

The editor is built on TipTap and ProseMirror, the open-source engine behind many modern writing apps. It supports headings, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough, text colour and highlight, font sizes, alignment, bulleted and numbered lists, quotes, tables you can resize, links and images, plus undo/redo, a live word count and find and replace. A page view shows A4 or US Letter width.

Private by design, with autosave

Your document is kept in your browser's memory and autosaved to local storage on this device every time you pause typing, so an accidental refresh doesn't lose work. Nothing is sent to a server — useful for CVs, contracts and personal letters. Saving to DOCX builds a real Word file with the docx library; PDF uses the same engine as Fylo's Word to PDF converter.

Keyboard shortcuts

Common shortcuts work as in desktop word processors: Ctrl+B for bold, Ctrl+I for italic, Ctrl+U for underline, Ctrl+Z to undo and Ctrl+Shift+Z to redo. On a Mac, use Cmd instead of Ctrl. Typing '# ' at the start of a line makes a heading and '- ' starts a bulleted list.

Can I open .doc files?

Only .docx. Save older .doc files as .docx in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice first.

Will my Word formatting be kept?

Text, headings, lists, tables and images are imported. Complex layouts like columns, text boxes and headers are simplified.

Where is my document saved?

Autosave keeps a copy in this browser on this device only. Use Save to download a file.

Can several people edit together?

No — the editor is single-user and fully offline-capable.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Document Editor runs entirely in your browser — your files are processed on your own device and never sent anywhere. Once the page has loaded, it even keeps working if your connection drops.
