Fill or fit?
Fill crops away the parts of the picture that don't fit the new shape, keeping the frame full — the standard for turning horizontal footage into vertical Shorts, as long as the subject is near the centre. Fit shrinks the whole picture to fit and adds black bars, so nothing is lost; it suits slides, screen recordings and anything with text near the edges.
Sizes for each platform
Vertical 9:16 exports at 1080 × 1920 at 1080p — the native size for Reels, TikTok and Shorts. Square 1:1 exports at 1080 × 1080, portrait 4:5 at 1080 × 1350 and landscape 16:9 at 1920 × 1080. Choose 720p for smaller files when quality matters less.
Turning landscape into vertical
When you convert 16:9 footage to 9:16 with Fill, only the centre third of the frame remains, so frame your subject in the middle when filming if you plan to post vertically. Talking-head videos, product close-ups and most sports clips crop well. Wide group shots and slides usually look better with Fit, where the full picture sits in the middle of a vertical frame with bars above and below — space you can fill with a caption using the Text tool.

| YouTube, TV | 16:9 | 1920 × 1080 |
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose which part to keep when filling?
Fill keeps the centre of the frame. Custom positioning isn't available yet.
Does cropping reduce quality?
Cropping keeps fewer pixels, so zoomed-in areas can look softer; export at 1080p for the best result.
Can I rotate a sideways video too?
Yes — use Rotate 90° in the same panel.
Will the sound be kept?
Yes.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Crop Video runs entirely in your browser — your files are processed on your own device and never sent anywhere. Once the page has loaded, it even keeps working if your connection drops.
