The WAV is encoded to WMA2 at 192 kbps, about 85% smaller.
How does Fylo convert WAV to WMA?
Fylo decodes the PCM audio in the WAV with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and encodes it with Windows Media Audio 2 (wmav2) at 192 kbps in an ASF container. Going from lossless to lossy is where the big saving happens: a 3-minute song is ≈ 32 MB as WAV but ≈ 3.6 MB at 160 kbps as WMA. The original sample rate and channel layout are kept unless you change them under Advanced.
What's the difference between WAV and WMA?
WAV was introduced by Microsoft and IBM in 1991 and, like AVI, uses the RIFF container. Most WAVs hold uncompressed PCM audio: CD quality (44.1 kHz, 16-bit, stereo) runs at 1,411 kbps, or about 10.6 MB per minute.
WMA (Windows Media Audio) was released by Microsoft in 1999 to compete with MP3 and is stored in the ASF container. Windows Media Player ripped CDs to WMA by default for years, so many older music collections are WMA.
