Why convert WAV to M4A?
M4A is the native format for Apple Music and iPhones, ideal for podcasts and music you'll play on Apple devices.
What happens when you convert WAV to M4A?
Fylo encodes AAC at 160 kbps in an M4A container, cutting file size by about 90%.
How does Fylo convert WAV to M4A?
Fylo decodes the PCM audio in the WAV with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and encodes it with FFmpeg's AAC encoder at 160 kbps inside an MPEG-4 (M4A) container. Going from lossless to lossy is where the big saving happens: a 3-minute song is ≈ 32 MB as WAV but ≈ 3.6 MB at 160 kbps as M4A. The original sample rate and channel layout are kept unless you change them under Advanced.
What's the difference between WAV and M4A?
WAV was introduced by Microsoft and IBM in 1991 and, like AVI, uses the RIFF container. Most WAVs hold uncompressed PCM audio: CD quality (44.1 kHz, 16-bit, stereo) runs at 1,411 kbps, or about 10.6 MB per minute.
M4A is an MPEG-4 container that holds only audio — usually AAC, or Apple Lossless (ALAC). Apple popularised the extension with the iTunes Store in 2003; iPhone Voice Memos and many podcasts also use it. Audiobooks often use the related .m4b extension.

Frequently asked questions
Can I make it lossless?
Fylo's M4A uses AAC (lossy). For lossless, choose WAV to FLAC.
Will tags be kept?
WAV files rarely carry tags; you can add them in your music app.
Is my WAV file uploaded to a server?
No. Fylo runs ffmpeg, the same engine used by professional video tools, compiled to WebAssembly inside your browser. Your WAV file is read directly from your device and never sent anywhere.
