Why convert WAV to Opus?
Voice notes, podcasts and streaming apps benefit from Opus's excellent quality at low bitrates.
What happens when you convert WAV to Opus?
Fylo encodes Opus at 48 kHz, 160 kbps by default. For speech, 64–96 kbps is plenty.
How does Fylo convert WAV to Opus?
Fylo decodes the PCM audio in the WAV with ffmpeg compiled to WebAssembly and encodes it with FFmpeg's native Opus encoder at 160 kbps and 48 kHz in an Ogg container. Going from lossless to lossy is where the big saving happens: a 3-minute song is ≈ 32 MB as WAV but ≈ 2.9 MB at 128 kbps as Opus. Opus always runs at 48 kHz, so the audio is resampled if needed.
What's the difference between WAV and Opus?
WAV was introduced by Microsoft and IBM in 1991 and, like AVI, uses the RIFF container. Most WAVs hold uncompressed PCM audio: CD quality (44.1 kHz, 16-bit, stereo) runs at 1,411 kbps, or about 10.6 MB per minute.
Opus is an open, royalty-free codec standardised by the IETF as RFC 6716 in 2012. It blends speech technology from Skype's SILK with music coding from Xiph's CELT, so it handles both voice and music well. Files are usually stored in the Ogg container with the .opus extension.
