Compress Image to 20 KB
Hit the 20 KB limit for exam and job forms — automatically
To compress an image to 20 KB, drop your photo below and click Compress. Fylo automatically finds the highest quality — and, if needed, the largest dimensions — that fit under 20 KB, then gives you a JPG ready for exam and job application forms. It all runs in your browser; your photo is never uploaded.

Why do forms ask for photos under 20 KB?
Online application portals for government exams, recruitment drives and scholarships often cap photo uploads at somewhere between 10 KB and 50 KB to keep their systems light. A phone photo is typically 2–5 MB — more than 100 times too large — and simply lowering JPG quality isn't enough.
The fix is to reduce quality and dimensions together. Fylo runs a binary search over JPG quality, and if even low quality won't fit, it scales the image down in small steps until the file is under your target — keeping the result as sharp as the limit allows. Fylo treats 1 KB as 1,000 bytes, so the file is safely under the limit whichever definition a portal uses.
Tips for a clear 20 KB photo
Crop tightly around your face and shoulders before compressing so pixels aren't wasted on background. A plain, light background compresses far better than a busy room. If your form also specifies pixel dimensions — for example 200 × 230 — enter them under Advanced so Fylo meets both rules at once. Always check the preview: at 20 KB, a 200–300-pixel-wide photo usually looks clean, whereas a 1000-pixel one looks blotchy.
| Photo width | Approx. JPG quality at 20 KB | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 200 px | 85–95% | Sharp |
| 400 px | 50–70% | Good |
| 800 px | 15–30% | Visible artefacts |
| 1600 px | Won't fit without resizing | Fylo downsizes automatically |
Frequently asked questions
Will the output be exactly 20 KB?
It will be at or just under 20 KB (20,000 bytes). Forms reject files above the limit, so Fylo always stays below it.
Can I choose a different size, like 30 KB or 100 KB?
Yes. Change the target size in the settings to any value.
What if my form needs a minimum size, like 10–20 KB?
Fylo aims for the highest quality under your target, so results land close to the limit rather than far below it.
Which format is the output?
JPG, the format almost every application portal requires. You can choose WebP in Advanced if your site accepts it.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Compress Image to 20 KB runs entirely in your browser — your files are processed on your own device and never sent anywhere. Once the page has loaded, it even keeps working if your connection drops.
